Vegetarian Food in Thailand: Beyond the Worry
Thai cooking leans on fish sauce and shrimp paste as base seasonings in an enormous share of dishes β€” including plenty that look entirely vegetable-based. A green curry or a plate of stir-fried vegetables can still carry fish sauce underneath, which is exactly the kind of thing that's invisible unless you know to ask.

The part that actually makes Thailand workable: the phrase 'mangsawirat' (vegetarian) is widely understood, and Bangkok and Phuket both have a real, visible vegetarian food scene β€” not just Indian restaurants (of which there are plenty, especially in tourist areas), but genuine Thai vegetarian kitchens that skip fish sauce entirely on request. Thailand's annual Vegetarian Festival (usually around October) also means vegetarian food culture is more mainstream here than in a lot of neighbouring countries.

Jain requirements go a step further than plain vegetarian β€” no onion, no garlic, no root vegetables β€” and Thai vegetable dishes very often include both onion and garlic as a base. This is the specific gap: a restaurant confidently offering 'vegetarian' options doesn't automatically mean Jain-friendly options, and the two get conflated more often than they should.

What actually works in practice: hotels used to Indian guests (common in both Bangkok and Phuket given the volume of Indian tourism) can usually accommodate Jain requests if asked in advance, and Indian restaurants are genuinely everywhere in the main tourist districts as a reliable fallback. The mistake is assuming a generic Thai restaurant will get it right without being told specifically.

Bottom line: Thailand is one of the easier Southeast Asian destinations for vegetarian travel, precisely because there's real infrastructure for it β€” it just needs to be requested clearly, not assumed.

We confirm Jain and vegetarian meal arrangements with every hotel and restaurant stop on our Thailand routes before you travel, so this isn't something you're negotiating on day one of your trip.
